Pet Care Essentials for Kerala's Tropical Climate
How to keep your furry friends happy, healthy, and cool in the heat and humidity of Kerala.
Pet Care Essentials for Kerala's Tropical Climate
Living in Kerala means dealing with high humidity and significant heat, especially during the summer months. For our pets, who can't sweat like we do, this climate presents unique challenges. Here's a guide to essential care for pets in Kochi, Trivandrum, and throughout the state.
1. Hydration is Priority
Always ensure your pet has access to clean, cool water. In Kerala's heat, water bowls can quickly become warm or grow algae. Clean the bowls daily and consider adding an ice cube in the afternoon.
2. Managing the Humidity
High humidity can lead to skin infections and fungal growth, especially in breeds with thick coats or folds (like Pugs and Persians).
- Drying is Key: If your dog gets wet in the monsoon rain, dry them thoroughly immediately.
- Regular Grooming: Brushing helps remove dead hair and allows the skin to breathe.
3. Walking Schedule
Avoid walking your dog between 10 AM and 5 PM. The tar roads in cities like Kochi can become hot enough to burn their paw pads. Stick to early mornings or late evenings.
4. Tick and Flea Prevention
Kerala's climate is a breeding ground for parasites. Consistent use of vet-recommended tick and flea preventatives is mandatory to avoid diseases like Tick Fever.
5. Identifying Heatstroke
Symptoms include excessive panting, drooling, reddened gums, and lethargy. If you suspect your pet is overheating, move them to a cool area and contact a vet immediately.
