Hamster Habitat Setup: Creating a Small World
Hamsters are nocturnal, curious, and incredibly fun to observe. Setting up their habitat correctly is the first step toward a happy hamster.
The Enclosure
While wire cages are common, ensure the base is deep enough for burrowing. Many owners now prefer large glass tanks or "Bin Cages" that provide more continuous floor space.
Wheels and Tunnels
Hamsters can run several miles in a single night! A solid-surface wheel (not wire, which can cause injuries) is a must-have. Add tunnels and hides to mimic their natural burrowing environment.
Bedding Choice
Use safe, unscented paper-based bedding or aspen shavings. Avoid cedar or pine, as the oils can be harmful to their respiratory systems.
Enrichment
Provide chew toys made of safe woods to help them manage their ever-growing teeth.
