Goldfish Care Essentials: Beyond the Bowl

Contrary to popular belief, a simple bowl is the worst home for a goldfish. To ensure your "goldie" lives a long and healthy life, you need to provide a proper habitat.

1. Space Matters

Goldfish produce more waste than most other fish. A single goldfish needs at least 20-30 gallons of water to stay healthy and reach its full size.

2. Filtration and Oxygen

A high-quality filter is essential to remove ammonia and nitrites from the water. Additionally, ensure there is enough surface agitation or an air stone to provide oxygen.

3. The Diet

Don't just stick to flakes. Supplement their diet with specialized pellets, frozen peas (deshelled), and live brine shrimp for variety.

4. Temperature

Goldfish are cold-water fish. In Kerala's tropical heat, ensure their tank is kept in a cool, shaded area away from direct sunlight.
